Sophomore Alex Kosel completed his second year on the Osseo High boys swim & dive team, setting numerous best times throughout the season.
Kosel primarily competed in the 50 and 500 freestyle events, but occasionally swam in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 backstroke.
In the regular season, Kosel’s time of 1:51.90 in the 200 free was fourth best in the Northwest Suburban Conference. His 500 free time of 5:09.37 was seventh. He was also on the 400 free relay team that had the second-best time in the conference.
Kosel was one of three Osseo swimmers to earn All-Conference honors.
At the Section 5AA meet, Kosel’s individual events were the 50 and 500 free. He also swam on the 200 and 400 free relays.
After falling just short of qualifying for the A final in both of his individual swims at the 2022 Section 5AA meet, Kosel comfortably finished inside the top 8 in the prelims in 2023, setting lifetime best times in the process.
To qualify for state, swimmers must finish in the top two of their event at their respective section meet, or meet the time standard set by the MSHSL. The same rule applies to relays.
In the prelims, in the 50 free, Kosel’s time of 22.47 seconds was good for fourth. In the 500 free, his time of 4:53.73 was second. Both swims were lifetime best times.
In the finals session, Kosel wound up in fifth place in the 50 free at 22.61 seconds. He came in third in the 500 free at 4:54.90.
He led off Osseo’s 200 free relay that finished fifth and anchored the 400 free relay that came in third. His split of 48.86 seconds in the 400 free relay was also a personal best.
