We’re inviting parents to College Counselor Mrs. Walker is doing graduate-level research that could strengthen our college counseling program, and help us better understand our families’ college interests and needs.  All sophomore and junior parents received a letter and consent form in the mail explaining details, and how we and our sons and daughters can participate. My own family, now with a sophomore, looks forward to this.  Thank you for considering it too!

Saturday’s Wall Street Journal carried a feature on the restoration of Thomas Jefferson’s dining room at Monticello.  Turns out it had beautiful yellow walls!  We’re glad that Jefferson adopted PA’s colonial-style sensibilities!

Calling Parent Volunteers for Student Birthday Card Assistance
Mrs. Susie Truax and Miss Erica Hanson are looking for some parent volunteers to assist in this year-long project.  At least one parent volunteer is needed per division (i.e., Lower School, Middle School, Upper School).  This project would probably need at least two hours of dedicated time per week for the academic year.  If you would be interested in learning more information about how you can assist them for the 2011-2012 academic year, please contact
Mrs. Susie Truax by email or phone at (763) 258-2500 for Lower or Middle School, and Miss Erica Hanson by email or phone at (763) 258-5500 for Upper School.

Thank you for your time and assistance!  It is greatly appreciated!

Providence Academy Parent Parties
It's that time of year again!  It’s time to get together with other parents in your child's grade to catch up and have some fun!  We are looking for hosts for all grades.

For those new to Providence, parent parties are held to allow parents to get to know other parents of children in the same grade.  Parties have traditionally been held at a parent hosts home, although a host may choose to hold the party at another venue.  A group of parents may join together to host a party as well.  On average attendance is about 40%. The parties are held on Friday or Saturday nights from September to early November, with only one party held per night whenever possible, allowing parents the opportunity to attend parties for each of their children.  Occasionally, two parties are held on the same night, but only if there is no overlap for families having more than one child.  If hosts are not found for a grade there will not be a parent party for that grade.  PAPA reimburses the hosts $7.50/person for cost of beverages, paper products, etc.  In most cases, hosts ask guests to bring an appetizer or dessert to share.  PAPA provides printed invitations, envelopes, address labels, return labels and stamps.  The host assembles and mails the invitations.

Please contact Mrs. Nancy Ferreira by email or phone at (612) 269-9368 to schedule a date to host!

College Counselor's Corner
Mrs. Walker will continue meeting with seniors in the coming weeks to review each student’s final college list and to answer any questions about essays, resumes, scholarships, financial aid, interviews, college entrance testing and other college-related topics.  Seniors, now is the time to schedule an appointment!  As always, parents are welcome to attend.

The annual MEA Weekend break on October 21st and 22nd is a great opportunity to visit or revisit schools to which you plan to apply.  If you plan a visit to a college campus, notify the Admission Office at least two weeks in advance so that they can make plans to schedule a worthwhile visit, including attending classes, meeting with faculty, students, and staff, etc. Please note that many Minnesota schools generally will not grant admission interviews over the busy MEA Weekend but may have special programs scheduled.  Check the websites of the individual colleges for more information.

On Wednesday, October 12th
, all Providence Academy juniors will take the mandatory PSAT exam.  This exam is the pre-test for the SAT college entrance exam and is the official exam used in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Detailed information regarding the PSAT exam will follow in a mailing to junior students and parents this fall.

All juniors and their parents are invited to attend the Junior ParentCollege Night that will take place on Thursday, October 6th.  Here, you will learn important information on starting the college search process in earnest.  We are aiming for 100% participation in this event so please plan to attend!

The upcoming October school break (MEA), October 21st and 22nd, is a great time to visit colleges.  Many Minnesota schools have special programs for juniors scheduled over MEA Weekend.  Check college websites for more information.

Juniors ACT/SAT Test Prep
This year, Providence Academy has established a partnership with Revolution Test Prep.  Revolution is an outside company dedicated to helping students prep for the ACT and SAT testing during their junior year.  They will be conducting practice exams in September to help students determine which test they are more comfortable with followed by group prep sessions for Providence students on campus during January and February of 2012. Please refer to the
Revolution Test Prep websitefor details about registration and test prep philosophy.

Revolution Test Prep looks to simplify the testing process by helping students decide which test they are more comfortable wit,h since each test assesses students differently.  They offer  ACT and SAT testing and scoring free of charge for Providence juniors to aid in this process.  The attached ACT and SAT mock exam flyer has dates and times listed, along with registration information.  Also attached is a list of test prep options available both online and on site in the Twin Cities area.

This is not a requirement for Providence Academy students but another resource to help as you begin the college search process in earnest.

Dates are as follows:

  • Saturday, September 10th Practice ACT
  • Saturday, September 17th Practice SAT
  • December/January SAT Prep Sessions
  • January/ February ACT Prep Sessions

Please contact Mrs. Walker with any questions you may have regarding this new program.

All sophomore parents are invited to attend the 9th
/10th Grade Parent College Night that will take place Tuesday, October 11th.  Here, you will learn important information regarding the college process.  All sophomores will take the mandatory PSAT Exam on Wednesday, October 12th.  The PSAT is considered a practice exam for tenth grade students.  The results should be used to determine areas of academic strength as well as areas in which each student may want to improve.  Detailed information regarding the PSAT exam will follow in a mailing to sophomore students and parents this fall.  Sophomores will take the PSAT again their junior year when their scores will be entered into the National Merit Scholarship competition.

All freshmen parents are invited to attend the 9th
/10th Grade Parent College Night that will take place on Tuesday, October 11th.  Here, you will learn important information about the college process.  All freshmen will take the mandatory PLAN exam on Wednesday, October 12th.  The PLAN is a pre-ACT exam administered to help familiarize students with college entrance test content and format, give them a feel for timed testing, as well as help them identify areas of academic strength and weakness.  Detailed information regarding the PLAN exam will follow in a mailing to freshmen students and parents this fall.
